Week 12: Subaru–Dog Tested, Dog Approved-An Adorably Relatable Ad for Dog Owners or Lovers Alike
Subaru Dog Tested | Off-Roading
This Subaru commercial is very successful! It features an adorable Golden Retriever family on an off-roading adventure when one of the baby pups wants to get filthy and muddy and the littlest one in a car seat, which is precious beyond measure, seems to have no interest in being muddy or messy in any regard. So upon getting in trouble with the dad pup, the little one that wants to be messy has the window rolled up on them. This ad is successful in a lot of ways, including but not limited to, how fast it is(only 15 seconds!), the relatability for dog owners, the cuteness and tug of the heartstrings of this pup family, showcasing the durability and versatility of Subrau, making a commercial that is hard to forget with a deep connection to the correct target consumer and so much more.
The biggest thing that stands out to me about this ad is the pups and the pup family, not only in just how cute they are but in how relatable they are, especially as a pet parent. I have a Golden Retriever, who looked a lot like the one in the car seat as a baby, and a German Shepherd, Husky, Chow-Chow mix. I also had another Golden that we unfortunately lost a few years ago, she was my other Goldens ½ sister, same mom but a different dad. Whenever I see this ad it always makes me think of them and how close they were and still are, in their own ways I’m sure. The Golden we lost, Butternut, always loved to roll in the mud after she got a bath, something her sister, Pumpkin, has now started to be more and more interested in as she gets older, and when they show the one pup that’s messy and the baby in the car seat looking so irritated with his/her sibling we always joke at my house that would be Pumpkin and Butters for sure. This is what makes this ad so relatable for me, though I’m sure every pet parent has their stories of messy adventures with their furry friends. Besides the one I’ve already mentioned, I can also think of many walks where all 3 of my pups have come home messy and needed to be wiped off or given a quick bath, especially with all the rain we are having now. Not only are the dogs a place of connection and part of what makes this commercial stick in consumer’s minds, but many consumers are also pulled in by the off-roading, which adds a bit of excitement to this ad!
The first thing the audience sees is this Subara Forster Wilderness being driven around all crazy and splashing mud everywhere getting the car absolutely covered, which is the other part of makes this commercial so hard to forget. Showcasing the Subaru Forster Wilderness with off-roading reaches a target audience interested in outdoor activities, such as off-roading, but also shows the durability and versatility of Subaru as a possible next vehicle for consumers. A consumer who is car shopping is likely to see this ad with many positives, such as if it’s a car that good for dogs, it’ll be good with kids, or consumers may see the off-roading as Subrau’s vehicles are well made to able to handle the impact of such activity, with regular driving it will last awhile, and they might even get a sense of safety from the aggressive way the car is being driven and everyone is safe. There are a lot of positives a consumer could imply about this Subaru ad that, for an ad that’s only 15 seconds, it packs a big punch!
