Week 8: Target and Walmart: A Similar Pricing Strategy, Different Aesthetic

Target and Walmart: A Similar Pricing Strategy, Different Aesthetic

In theme with this week's chapter readings, I have chosen to write my weblog about Target and Walmart and what kind of consumer their pricing appeals to;

Target: By having a more up-to-date and fresher store aesthetic, Target markets themselves as a middle to higher-end store but it’s their prices that make them a store that everyone from the everyday consumer looking to save money for a variety of reasons to the consumer looking to splurge on items such as home and personal electronics, cookware, furniture and more a place where all feel welcomed. By having everyday store brand prices on products within its “All In Motion” fitness equipment, grocery, clothing, “Up and Up” cosmetics, and more Target gets itself within a wider consumer base. Generally appealing more to college and college-aged students as well as all classes of families, the price strategy at Target is something that makes them viewed by consumers as an everyday store with the option for more. This price strategy is something that many competing stores, such as Walmart, also do.

Walmart: Generally viewed as the lower-end version of Target, Walmart also prices their products so that they are viewed by consumers as a store with flexibility. With a more relaxed and dated aesthetic Walmart markets itself as a middle to lower-end store but its product availability of low to higher-end items makes it a steadfast competitor to Target as well as like stores. With a selection of luxury bedding, jewelry, home and personal electronics, cookware, and more, Walmart is so much more than just an everyday store. While Walmart’s main market is the everyday consumer looking to save money with flexibility on everyday items, such as store brand “Great Value” grocery items, “Equate” cosmetics, and deals on almost everything when compared to its competitors, Walmart markets themselves to a wider variety of consumers, arguably the widest consumer variety. Typically appealing to mostly low to middle-income individuals and families, Walmart also has a strong pull with college and college-aged students as well as higher-end consumers.

I often compare products at both of these stores and typically get products at Walmart because they are generally less expensive but like going to Target more than Walmart, due to their up-to-date and modern aesthetic. However, there are products at Target that are less expensive than Walmart, which I often find myself shocked about due to the different aesthetics of these two stores. Target is also a store where you can walk around the whole store and explore if you have the time, whereas Walmart has sections that you can walk around and explore but the store is more about getting what you need and getting out than Target in my opinion. Ultimately I feel both stores have great deals and satisfy my needs as an everyday buyer, as I trend more toward store-brand items than name brands.

  1. I was just in Target today and it's funny how true this is. Have you noticed online Walmart is trying to appeal to higher-end consumers as well though?

    I read somewhere before about the pricing strategy for Target, how they can charge more for the same things because they have the nicer store experience, they treat their employees better, etc.,

    Great post!

  2. Hi Dreizme, thank you for your comment! Yes, I have noticed that at Walmart. I'm not surprised that you read that about Target, and have actually noticed this at Target! The Target near me has their minimum wage at like $17-18 an hour, which is crazy compared to Walmart which I believe is just the state minimum.

Vistaprint: More Than Print and More than Just a Promo Ad

   Vistaprint: More Than Print and More than Just a Promo Ad More Than Print   In theme with this week's readings of Chapter 18 on “ integrated marketing communications and direct marketing”, I’ve chosen Vistaprint’s “More Than Print” ad as it covers a lot of this week's reading.  Vistaprint’s “More Than Print” ad shows two men with Bostonian accents working at what looks like the Boston Celtics ProShop talking about the different products that Vistaprint offers besides business cards. Vistaprint is a company that offers a wide variety of business items from business cards, flyers, packaging, and more, as the commercial points out, but they also have way more than just needs for businesses. They also offer customizations on a variety of products for the everyday consumer such as cups and mugs, pillowcases, t-shirts, and more. This commercial does a great job of including a lot of promotional elements such as having a partnership with a well-known prestigious name lik...

Week 6: Pizza Shark

                                                                                                         Pizza Shark Commercial    In theme with our readings this week, I have chosen a local Pizza shop with a great commercial targeting a wide variety customer base. Its bright happy colors in combination with the animation of the commercial itself make it a great target for families with children. This is a commercial I’ve seen many times watching Celtics games and always get a...

Week 12: Subaru–Dog Tested, Dog Approved-An Adorably Relatable Ad for Dog Owners or Lovers Alike

  Week 12: Subaru – Dog Tested, Dog Approved-An Adorably Relatable Ad for Dog Owners or Lovers Alike   Subaru Dog Tested | Off-Roading      This Subaru commercial is very successful! It features an adorable Golden Retriever family on an off-roading adventure when one of the baby pups wants to get filthy and muddy and the littlest one in a car seat, which is precious beyond measure, seems to have no interest in being muddy or messy in any regard. So upon getting in trouble with the dad pup, the little one that wants to be messy has the window rolled up on them. This ad is successful in a lot of ways, including but not limited to, how fast it is(only 15 seconds!), the relatability for dog owners, the cuteness and tug of the heartstrings of this pup family, showcasing the durability and versatility of Subrau, making a commercial that is hard to forget with a deep connec...
